[...] Casual games represent a big growth area for the entire game industry. These games are inherently social and represent one of the best opportunities for the game industry to take back some of the excitement that has grown up around social networking. They’re also the kind of games that can broaden the market beyond hardcore gamers, a trend that has shown great promise since the launch of the Nintendo Wii in 2006. EA is aware of these trends and last year established a separate label and organizational group headed by former Activision executive Kathy Vrabeck to target the casual sector. Spearheading the push into casual fare are some surprisingly entertaining games based on the Hasbro board games. [...]

From the development side, casual games are easier to develop and shorter lifecycle. That's why casual game become popular.

[...] I’m coming across a couple of new casual games companies a week. All of them are inspired by the success of sites such as Pogo.com, which has 1.5 million paying subscribers for the premium version of its site. They’re also impressed at how Nintendo has been able to broaden the video game market beyond hardcore gamers with its Wii console. And then there are companies inspired by the more frothy excitement around Facebook applications and widgets on social networks. The Casual Games Association estimated the market for casual games reached $2.25 billion in sales in 2007. (our coverage) [...]

Hi Dean what's new? Cool beans on your post (wonder if this is the first for you on venturebeat?)

Anyway casual games are growing with the public, and I think its great that more people are enjoying video games.

Truthfully, its not all about the Wii, or all about GTA IV, or Gears of War 3, but in the end, its about gamers (whether they're "hardcore" or casual) enjoy their time playing.

While I've been a gamer since I was a kid, I can still dig casual games like diner dash and such.

Heck, sometimes my most fun times is playing games where my mind can just relax... and realistically i really get frustrated in some games that keep me "stuck" by going back and forth... so "arcade type" casual games are my favorite for just kicking some time.

Funny, how casual games used to so so wimpy... and now there more widely accepted. As long as game publishers don't cater to just the trends... i.e. just focus on casuals and forget the hardcore gaming crowd, I'm glad for the variety.
